Great kitchen design is really pretty simple, isn’t it?
It’s not about having a “Contemporary Kitchen”, a “Modern Geometric Work Area” or a “Minimalist” approach. While all of us can find boat loads of articles and even a few kitchen designers in Omaha, Nebraska that fervently preach, “Geometric Work Areas” with a “Contemporary Kitchen” feel. Most of us hear all that stuff and ask? “What did they just say?”
The truth is good kitchen design is really nothing more than creating an efficient work area that offers you plenty of storage, countertop space and a comfortable feel. What works for you might not work for your neighbor and that’s “OK”.
Before you hire a contractor, kitchen designer, or pull out the hammer and pry-bar, sit down at your kitchen table with a cup of coffee and a note pad. Ask yourself a couple of questions that will help you insure a new kitchen will be everything you hope for.
First, do you have enough storage space? Do you need more cabinets, for storage? What kind of cabinet space would work best in your kitchen? Today manufactures are working harder than ever to capture you as a customer. New convenience cabinet features recommended by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, (NKBA) include things like pantries with roll out trays to make items more accessible, roll out waist baskets and hidden bread boards.

Second, ask yourself if you have enough accessible counter space? Corner sink bases are a fairly new and very effective way to maximize counter space in kitchen design. In fact many new home plans feature a corner sink base in the kitchen. One common design flaw that you need to consider is the placement of the dish washer in relationship to the corner sink base. A dish washer located too close to the corner sink base will interfere with cleanup. A good rule to follow when designing your dream kitchen is you should always have enough room between your sink base and your dish washer to allow you to stand and load the dish washer comfortably. Be careful, because when the dish washer door is down you need room to turn around and be at the sink comfortable.
